A priori, Windows Longhorn ne verra pas le jour officiellement avant 2005. Des rumeurs sur le web indiquent qu'une autre version de Windows XP pourrait sortir en octobre 2003. il s'agirait de Windows XP SE (Second Edition). Seul Microsoft peut confirmer cette rumeur, et il ne l'a toujours pas fait. Cependant, cela ne serait pas étonnant puisque que Microsoft a besoin de renouveler son portefeuille de Windows (en effet, 2005 est une date bien lointaine).
Ce Windows XP SE pourrait intégrer Media Player 9, MSN Messenger 5.0, Internet Explorer 6.5 (voire IE7, prévu avant la fin 2003) et DirectX9.
Notre sérieux confrère Neowin dit avoir téléchargé Windows Longhorn nor Alpha build 3683 en ISO (ou Milestone build nr 3) dont je vous fais partager les images :
- Sidebar + Start Menu properties | New Display box | Start Menu, Send to
- My Hardware + Properties | Version dialogs | IE + Media bar
- Folder Toolbar | Folder Preview | Save As dialog (with zoom?) | Needs more work
