IBM users directed not to install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Quiz time: When a new IT security patch is announced by a non-IBM program provider for an application or operating system on your workstation, is it okay to go ahead download it?

The correct answer is: "Only after I've checked the IBM IT security site to confirm that this patch is approved for my IBM workstation."

Article Summary
Microsoft is preparing to make Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP available in mid-August of this year. IBM is directing users not to install Service Pack 2 due to known application problems and incompatibility with IBM workstation applications.

As you may have heard, Microsoft is preparing to make available Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP in mid-August of this year. The availability of SP2 for Windows XP has been highly anticipated on IT news sites all over the Internet.

While this patch may be good news for other Microsoft Windows XP owners, IBM is directing XP users not to install SP2.

Microsoft is already aware that SP2 will change the behavior of Internet Explorer and cause some application incompatibilties. IBM's large number of web applications will need to be tested and some modified to work correctly with SP2.

Currently, some high profile, business-critical applications are also known to conflict with SP2.

With SP2, Microsoft is also trying to dramatically tighten the level of security provided by the operating system. However, some of these efforts conflict with the security tools already in place in IBM. When the current issues and concerns have been addressed, IBM will deploy a customized version of SP2.

IBM will begin deploying customization code soon. No action is required on your part. This code will be delivered behind the scenes, and no reboot will be required.
