ATI : Post X1k Interview

David Legrand le 28 février 2006 (9 118 lectures)
PCi : You've not been very favoured by 3DMark new 2006 edition. What's your position about that ? Is Futurmark still credible ?

ATI : I believe that Futuremark did a great job with 3DMark05 and 3DMark03, as both of these benchmarks predicted future game performance very well.

3DMark06 however does, in my opinion, not predict future gaming performance very well nor does it reflect performance in todays games.

PCi : Do you think that filtering capabilities (AA and AF) should be used as much as HDR and SM 3.0 ?

ATI : I actually think it should take preference over HDR. Every graphics review for the past few years includes AA and AF numbers, and we have put a lot of effort into these areas (very visible with the X1k series, where we introduced angle-independent AF and Adaptive AA).

3DMark06 actually let’s you combine HDR with Anti-Aliasing. But because our X1k series is the only GPU series that supports this combination, the results are not comparable.

PCi : You have recently announced Imageon chips. Are Cellphone and PDA a new big market to fill for ATI ?

ATI : We are active in the cellphone and PDA markets for a number of years now, and we are very happy with the progress so far.

PCi : In what other sector would you wish to extend you offer ?

ATI : We are pretty much active in every market segment where information needs to be visualised, in the DTV market, cellphones and PDAs, game consoles, all sorts of PCs etc.

PCi : What are main new objectives for you in 2006 ?

ATI : The objectives stay the same every year, execute on our product line up. It is the product line up that keeps changing :)

PCi : A last word to conclude ?

ATI : I actually think the former answer makes for a good conclusion.

All the PC INpact Team want to thanks Rene and Maryline from ATI for the time they spent to answer our questions as the spellcheckers and the translators of this interview.
