Nous avons pu mettre la main sur la façon dont IBM s'occupait des mises à jour de ses milliers de PC, et notamment du dernier SP2. Comme vous pouvez le voir ci-dessous, IBM désactive pas mal d'options (firewall, Windows Update, etc). La plupart du temps, le géant américain les désactive car il détient une meilleure alternative. IBM a ainsi un meilleur pare-feu, a un applicatif propre afin de faire les mises à jour etc :

"Microsoft recognizes that SP2 will change the behavior of Internet Explorer and cause some application incompatibilties. IBM's large number of web applications will need to be tested and some modified to work correctly with SP2. Currently some high profile, business critical applications are known to conflict with SP2. With SP2, Microsoft is also trying to dramatically tighten the level of security provided by the operating system. However, some of these efforts conflict with the security tools already in place in IBM. When the current issues and concerns have been addressed, IBM will migrate users to a customized version of SP2.

Due to the aforementioned changes, IBM will begin deploying customization code immediately with EZ Update.This code will be delivered behind the scenes, and no reboot will be required. The customizations will:

- Install a Windows registry key that will disable the Windows Firewall
- Install a Windows registry key that will disable the Windows Security Center
- Install a Windows registry key that sets the initial state of the Internet Explorer 6 pop-up blocker to off
- Install a Windows registry key that will disable Windows Automatic Updates
- Install a Windows registry key that will identify the users' machines as receiving these modifications"

Concernant l'anti pop-up non activé, IBM aurait besoin dans certaines situations de voir apparaître des pop-up, et préfère les voir plutôt que de spécifier quand les bloquer ou non.

A propos du dernier point, IBM a aussi un logiciel gérant son parc de PC tout entier, et n'a donc pas besoin de ce genre d'identification.
